Abstract: The present invention relates to a secure device-to-device communication system and method for fifth-generation Internet of Things networks using lightweight cryptography. The system comprises D2D-capable user equipment and a 5G network authentication infrastructure configured to authenticate devices and establish secure direct communication. A D2D authentication token is generated following authentication of a device and is exchanged and verified during device discovery and D2D link establishment. Following successful token verification, the communicating devices establish a shared cryptographic secret using an elliptic-curve based key exchange mechanism. An elliptic-curve digital signature mechanism may be employed for authentication of cryptographic information. The established shared secret is subsequently used for authenticated encryption with associated data of D2D data. The authenticated encryption may employ a lightweight cryptographic algorithm selected from AES-GCM, ASCON, SpoC, Spook and GIFT-COFB according to resource requirements of the communicating devices. At the receiving device, the transmitted ciphertext is authenticated and decrypted using the shared cryptographic secret before acceptance of the corresponding data. The invention thereby integrates device authentication, D2D token verification, secure key establishment and lightweight authenticated encryption into a unified 5G D2D communication procedure, providing confidentiality and integrity while addressing computational and energy constraints of resource-constrained IoT devices.
