Abstract: ABSTRACT [0026] Modern innovations in digital signal processing and field-programmable gate array (FPGA) technologies have made dual-mode frequency conversion feasible for incorporation in small, reconfigurable Software Defined Radio (SDR) architectures. This work is an exposition of the design and FPGA implementation of a single module digital frequency converter that is both up-convertible and down-convertible based on Verilog. The architecture incorporates a pipelined Numerically Controlled Oscillator (NCO) with a 32-bit phase accumulator and quarter-wave lookup tables for sine and cosine generation, minimizing area and power consumption. Fixed-point arithmetic also maximizes resource usage and performance. Dynamic real-time mode switching is realized by means of a control signal without reconfiguration. Simulation proves correct frequency translation for several bands, synthesis, and implementation on the Edge A7 FPGA to have low resource usage, low dynamic power consumption, and sound timing behavior. Real-time checking with the ILA guarantees working correctness. The converter as described is found highly appropriate for dynamic frequency agility needs of SDR applications with minimal power usage and effective utilization of hardware.
