Abstract: ABSTRACT A REACTOR FOR THE PREPARATION OF 2-ACRYLAMIDO-2-METHYLPROPANE SULFONIC ACID AND PROCESS THEREOF The present invention relates to a reactor system (400) and process for the preparation of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid are disclosed. The reactor system (400) comprises a reactor vessel, a first inlet two dip pipe (402, 403) extending to approximately 90% of the reactor length for introducing acrylonitrile sulphate solution, a second inlet two dip pipe (404, 405) extending to 90% and 50% of the reactor length for introducing isobutylene in liquefied form, a perforated ring-type sparger (414) positioned at the bottom of the reactor vessel for dispersing isobutylene in gaseous form, and a shaft (409) bearing one or more pairs of propellers (410) driven by a variable frequency drive motor (VFD) (407). The propellers (410) operate at 155 to 170 rpm and a tip speed of 5.5 to 6.5 m/sec. The process maintains a reaction temperature of 40°C to 50°C and a residence time of 90 to 180 minutes, yielding AMPS at purity in the range of 99.60 % to 99.72% and with viscosity in the range of 13000 CPS to 14000 CPS.
