MUMBAI, India, Aug. 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631047244 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Kharagpur on April 13, 2026, for A Process Of Making Hydrophobic Film From Pullulan..
Inventors include Bibek Bahadur Shrestha; and Jayeeta Mitra.
The application for the patent was published on August 28, 2026, under issue no. 35/2026.
Abstract: ABSTRACT TITLE: A PROCESS OF MAKING HYDROPHOBIC FILM FROM PULLULAN. The invention relates to a hydrophobic film comprising the film formulation having chemically modified biodegradable pullulan derivative including esterified pullulan based polymeric network with the source pullulan in the range of 3% (w/v) to 7% (w/v), adapted for improved hydrophobicity, barrier performance, thermal stability and flexibility of the film. The invention also provides an improved process for producing the esterified pullulan-based hydrophobic film with reduced water solubility and improved barrier performance. The film formulation comprises a butylation source (20 to 60% v/v), an activation agent/catalyst (40 to 80% v/v), and pullulan (3 to 7% w/v), reacted at 50 to 80 °C for 0.5 to 3 h. The resulting powder is dissolved in a non-aqueous solvent to obtain a homogeneous film- forming solution, cast, dried, and peeled to yield flexible packaging films. The films exhibit enhanced hydrophobicity, lowered water vapour permeability, improved thermal stability, and modified mechanical behavior. Biocompatibility of the esterified material is also evaluated for suitability in food-contact packaging applications.
