Abstract: The present invention provides an integrated process for recycling polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste into bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) using a magnetically recoverable heterogeneous nano-catalyst. The process comprises reacting PET feedstock with ethylene glycol at 190-220°C in the presence of a magnetically separable layered double hydroxide (LDH) catalyst, preferably cerium-doped nickel-iron LDH (1mol% Ce). Upon completion, the catalyst is efficiently recovered from the hot reaction mixture using a high-gradient magnetic separator and reused for four to six cycles without significant loss of activity. The product stream is purified by hot water addition to remove oligomers, treatment with amine-functionalized activated carbon for decolorization of colored feedstocks, and cooling crystallization to obtain high-purity BHET. Excess ethylene glycol is recovered by distillation and recycled. The process achieves BHET yields up to 98.4% from bottle flakes and 77.8% from textile waste, providing a sustainable and industrially applicable solution for PET waste recycling.
