Abstract: A PROCESS FOR RECOVERING BATTERY-GRADE COBALT SULPHATE FROM SPENT CATALYSTS BY POLYSACCHARIDE-ASSISTED LEACHING AND CHITOSAN ADSORPTION The invention relates to hydrometallurgical recovery of cobalt from cobalt-bearing spent catalysts and provides a process in which dried, milled catalyst is leached with an acid reagent, preferably sulfuric acid, in the presence of a biodegradable polysaccharide additive that hydrolyses under acidic conditions to assist reduction and dissolution of cobalt as Co2+, thereby improving cobalt extraction from higher oxidation state species. A clarified cobalt-bearing pregnant leach solution is then contacted at pH 4 to 6 with cross-linked chitosan beads prepared from chitosan, acetic acid, NaOH, and glutaraldehyde, enabling selective cobalt adsorption, acid desorption, and production of cobalt carbonate, cobalt hydroxide, cobalt sulphate crystals, or battery-grade cobalt sulphate. The process achieves CoSO4.7H2O crystals of greater than 99.5% purity with low Na, Fe, Al, and Ni impurities, and is particularly useful for sustainable manufacture of battery- grade cobalt sulphate from spent catalyst waste.
