Abstract: ABSTRACT A PROCESS FOR PRODUCING HYDROGEN AND CARBON NANOTUBES FROM COAL BED METHANE The present invention relates to a process for producing hydrogen and carbon nanotubes from a coal bed methane feed. The process comprises providing a nickel-supported bentonite catalyst, reducing the catalyst in a hydrogen-containing atmosphere, and contacting the coal bed methane feed with the reduced catalyst under non-oxidative methane-cracking conditions in the absence of added steam and added oxygen. The catalyst may be prepared by co-precipitation and may comprise 10 wt.% to 50 wt.% nickel, based on the total weight of the catalyst. The methane-cracking reaction may be carried out at a temperature in the range of 500 °C to 650 °C to produce a gaseous product comprising hydrogen and a solid carbon product comprising carbon nanotubes. In certain embodiments, the carbon nanotubes comprise multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The process may further comprise separating the carbon nanotubes from the spent catalyst by acid treatment, filtration, washing and drying. Reference Figure:
