Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for producing acetic acid (AA) from sugarcane bagasse (SB), wherein SB is acid hydrolysed by reflux condensation in a Soxhlet apparatus with dilute sulphuric acid (SA), followed by vacuum filtration of the hydrolysate to obtain crude filtrate containing AA. The resulting filtrate is subsequently batch-distilled at boiling point (BP) of AA to concentrate the AA component. Then the distillate is subjected to liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) using an acid miscible organic solvent (ethyl acetate, EA) to selectively transfer AA into the organic phase. After phase separation, the AA-enriched organic layer is further purified by batch-distillation at BP of EA to obtain purified AA. The process achieves an overall yield 25-30% under laboratory conditions. With the established equilibrium relationships among EA, AA, and water, as well as favourable solvent properties, the process is both scalable and industrially viable. For a given commercial biomass unit, the AA can represent a significant output that can be used for major industrial applications. Fig. 1
