MUMBAI, India, July 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611019085 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Ropar on February 19, 2026, for A Process For Fabricating Superhydrophobic Coatings From Recycled Silicone Rubber Waste.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a process (100) for producing superhydrophobic coatings on metallic substrates (210) using a high- pressure cold spraying technique and a composite feedstock derived from recycled silicone rubber waste. The process involves converting silicone rubber into silica-rich powder through cleaning (104), incineration (108), crushing and sieving (110), followed by blending (112) with copper powder in a predetermined weight ratio. The composite feedstock is deposited onto grit-blasted aluminium alloy substrates under optimized parameters of pressure, temperature, and stand-off distance. The deposition occurs in the solid state, ensuring phase stability and uniform distribution of silica within the copper matrix. The result is a copper and nano silica superhydrophobic surface coating (116) that exhibit micro–nano surface morphology and high water contact angles exceeding 150°, confirming superhydrophobic characteristics.
