Abstract: ABSTRACT: Title: A Process for Fabricating a pH-Responsive Film for Detecting Chicory Adulteration in Coffee Powder The present disclosure proposes a process for fabricating a biodegradable starch–polyvinyl alcohol analytical film plasticized with glycerol and incorporated with methyl red for direct interaction with aqueous coffee–chicory extracts, thereby providing a visible concentration-dependent colourimetric response for rapid qualitative detection of chicory adulteration in coffee powder. The process comprises dissolving 12 g of starch and 15 g of polyvinyl alcohol in 320 ml of water, adding 10 ml of glycerol as a plasticizer, adding methyl red as a pH-sensitive dye, and mixing to obtain a homogeneous casting mixture. The homogeneous casting mixture is cast over a flat casting surface, spread to form a substantially uniform film layer, dried, peeled, and cut into strips or sheets. The resulting pH-responsive analytical film absorbs the aqueous coffee-powder extract and produces a colourimetric response progressing from pale pink towards orange-red with increasing chicory content.
