Abstract: ABSTRACT TITLE: A PROCESS FOR ENERGY-EFFICIENT NON-ISOTHERMAL CYCLIC TEMPERING OF STEEL WITH ACCELERATION OF TEMPERING KINETICS. The present invention relates to a process for non-isothermal cyclic tempering of steel, comprising multiple short thermal cycles, each lasting only for a few seconds. To achieve the desired combination of strength and ductility, non-isothermal tempering is conducted within the temperature range of 300-500 °C. The present invention has been developed as an alternative to the conventional isothermal tempering process. This cyclic heat treatment lasted from 30 seconds to 1 minute, leading to energy and time savings. Non-isothermal tempering of hypoeutectoid Cr-Mo steel is conducted between 500-300 °C for 3-5 cycles and between 500-400 °C for 5 cycles, leading to microstructure consisting of fine tempered lath martensite with fine carbide precipitation, uniform through cross section, with Hardness ranged from 450 to 480 HV0.5. The process is particularly suitable for applications in the automotive industry, such as gears, crankshafts, axles; in the oil and gas industry, such as drill collars, tool joints, etc. (Figure 2)
