MUMBAI, India, Sept. 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641109705 A) filed by Hemalatha R; Ramya B; Suwetha D; Vivekanandha College Of Arts And Sciences For Women; and Dr. R. Jagatheesan on September 12, 2026, for A Process And System For Electrochemical Surface Bromination Of Nanomaterials.
Inventors include Hemalatha R; Ramya B; Suwetha D; Vivekanandha College Of Arts And Sciences For Women; and Dr. R. Jagatheesan.
The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.
Abstract: The invention relates to electrochemical surface functionalization of nanomaterials and discloses a process and system in which a DC power supply (101), anode (102), cathode (103), electrochemical reaction vessel (104), aqueous bromide electrolyte (105), and nanomaterial suspension (106) are operated under galvanostatic electrolysis to generate active brominating species (107) in situ from bromide ions, thereby brominating nanomaterial surfaces in a surface bromination zone (108). The process enables controlled, uniform bromination by adjusting current density, reaction time, and electrolyte concentration, while preserving morphology and intrinsic physicochemical properties. Compared with conventional bromination using molecular bromine or N-bromosuccinimide, the invention reduces toxic reagent use, hazardous waste, and purification complexity, and improves reproducibility, safety, scalability, and functionalization efficiency. The brominated nanomaterials are useful in catalysis, sensing, water purification, antimicrobial coatings, polymer nanocomposites, conductive coatings, energy storage, and biomedical applications.
