MUMBAI, India, Aug. 12 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611055545 A) filed by Indraprastha Institute Of Information Technology Delhi on April 30, 2026, for A Prism-Based Optical Simultaneously Transmitting And Reflecting Intelligent Reflecting Surface For Underwater Wireless Optical Communication Systems.
Inventors include Ms. Rehana Salam; and Dr. Vivek Ashok Bohara.
The application for the patent was published on August 07, 2026, under issue no. 32/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a liquid crystal assisted prism-based optical simultaneously transmitting and reflecting intelligent reflecting surface (LC-Prism-OSTAR- IRS) for underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems. The invention comprises an intelligent reflecting surface (200) having a plurality of prism- shaped liquid crystal elements (210) arranged in a matrix configuration, each element comprising a first refractive interface (211), a second non-parallel refractive interface (212), a liquid crystal medium (214) disposed therebetween, and electrode means (215, 216) for applying an electric field across the liquid crystal medium. A controller unit (500) dynamically varies the refractive index of the liquid crystal medium in response to an applied control signal. The prism geometry together with electrically tunable refractive index enables simultaneous transmission, reflection, and adaptive beam steering of an incident optical beam in an underwater medium without mechanical movement.
