The application for the patent was published on October 02, 2026, under issue no. 40/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a portable fluorescence-based microplastic detection system using edge-computed machine learning. The system comprises an ESP32- WROOM-32 microcontroller, 460 nm blue LED excitation source, 550 nm longpass optical filter, silicon PIN photodiode, 10 mm quartz cuvette, matte-black light-tight enclosure, OLED display, and Li-ion power system. Chemical components include Nile Red fluorescent dye and acetone solvent. Firmware provides ADC linearization, embedded linear/polynomial ML inference, and MQTT communication for real-time PPM measurement, cloud integration, timestamping, and GPS-based pollution mapping. Together, these subsystems form a sin- gular, portable, end-to-end instrument for quantifying microplastic concentration in field water samples. The system provides a low-cost, rapid, battery-operated and handheld solution, with a cost per test of less than INR 2 and measurement results obtained within 30 seconds without requiring laboratory infrastructure. The system targets a greater than 99% reduction in capital cost compared with Raman spectroscopy and achieves a calibration linearity of R² 0.95, supporting reliable fluorometric detection using Nile Red.
