Abstract: The release of hazardous dye effluents, particularly non-biodegradable triphenylmethane dyes like malachite green, presents a severe environmental concern due to their toxic and carcinogenic properties, necessitating the advancement of efficient water purification technologies. This invention discloses a novel CuWO4-ZrO2 type-II heterojunction photocatalyst synthesized through a single-step precipitation-hydrothermal technique, designed to enhance the degradation efficiency of such organic pollutants. The heterojunction architecture utilizes the synergistic interaction between copper tungstate (CuWO4) and zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), where photogenerated electrons migrate from the conduction band of the CuWO4 phase to the conduction band of the ZrO2 phase, while photogenerated holes move from the valence band of ZrO2 to the valence band of CuWO4. This effective charge separation mechanism significantly improves photocatalytic performance, morphological stability, and reusability compared to single-component photocatalysts. Experimental evaluations demonstrate the complete decomposition of malachite green dye within two hours under visible light irradiation, providing an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly solution for the treatment of industrial dye wastewater.
