Abstract: A method of operating a patient physiological monitoring system (100) for detecting patient collapse comprises acquiring, by a processor (201), sensor signals from a multi-modal sensor unit (209), calibrating a detection threshold using a per-patient calibration segment, detecting a suspect respiratory condition by fusing a first respiratory sensor signal and a second respiratory sensor signal into a fused signal, confirming the suspect condition as a respiratory collapse condition upon a thermal confirmation signal or a motion confirmation signal, validating the respiratory collapse condition as a critical collapse condition upon an abnormal cardiac confirmation signal, generating an alarm signal upon such validation, or independently when an oxygen saturation value falls below a predetermined threshold, and transmitting, via a communication interface (205), the alarm signal to a remote device (103) to be visualized by a user interface (207).
