Abstract: ABSTRACT A PASSIVE LOAD-TRIGGERED EXPANDING ROBOTIC FOOT SYSTEM FOR QUADRUPED LOCOMOTION ON DEFORMABLE TERRAIN The present invention relates to a passive expanding robotic foot system in the technical field of legged robotics for quadruped locomotion on deformable surfaces. The system comprises a central hub with inclined pin-and-slot interfaces, rigid toe segments each hinged via a proximal pivot pin within the slots and carrying compliant footpads, a gear-linked transmission assembly housed within the hub to synchronize radial translation and rotation of all toe segments, and preloaded coil springs forming a passive retraction system. Upon application of a vertical ground reaction force to any footpad, the pivot pins traverse the inclined slots, converting vertical load into coupled outward translation and rotation of the toe segments, while the transmission ensures synchronized expansion to enlarge the contact footprint; release of the load allows spring-biased retraction to a compact configuration.
