Abstract: Aspect Oriented Software Development (AOSD) achieves a higher degree of modularity compared to the procedural and Object Oriented (OO) methodologies. This methodology provides constructs to clearly separate core and cross-cutting concerns into independent units of functionality. Due to this improved separation of concerns, it is generally considered that the Aspect Oriented (AO) software will exhibit higher quality than its OO counterpart. Even though, the AO methodology claims to improve maintainability, reusability and evolution, these quality attributes are not currently quantitatively measurable from the AO software. This mandates a need to design an approach to quantitatively assess the quality attributes of AO software. A set of core design properties such as, cohesion, coupling, inheritance, complexity and ripple effect, can directly or indirectly affect the above-mentioned quality attributes. These properties can be analyzed using a suitable set of metrics that quantitatively captures the design artifacts that affect them either positively or negatively. Quality of software requires thoughtful considerations during the earlier phases of Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) itself and has a far-reaching impact on the usefulness of software. Since, quality cannot be directly measured for a software product, a systematic approach needs to be defined and applied to the design of software. Each new software development methodology provides certain unique techniques to address the shortcomings of the earlier methodologies. In this context, it becomes significant to have a Layered Measurement Approach to measure and understand the impact of any new methodology. To fulfill this need, a layered measurement of design properties has been proposed with structural design than can be evaluated using different methodologies that can use the core software design properties.
