MUMBAI, India, July 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641058018 A) filed by Saveetha Institute Of Medical And Technical Sciences on May 07, 2026, for A Non-Invasive Nail Biomarker Method For Assessing Micronutrient Deficiency.
Inventors include M. S Abimanyu V; Dr. Saravanan Sekaran; and Deepak Nallaswamy Veeraiyan.
The application for the patent was published on July 03, 2026, under issue no. 27/2026.
Abstract: ABSTRACT The present invention discloses a non-invasive diagnostic method for assessing micronutrient deficiency using human nail biomarkers. The invention utilizes fingernail samples as a stable biological matrix capable of reflecting long-term micronutrient status in the human body. The method comprises the steps of collecting nail clippings from individuals, performing a standardized decontamination procedure to remove external contaminants, drying and pulverizing the samples, followed by chemical digestion using acid-based reagents. The digested samples are subjected to quantitative elemental analysis using techniques such as Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), or Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) to determine concentrations of essential micronutrients including iron, zinc, selenium, magnesium, and calcium. The measured elemental concentrations are analyzed against predefined nutritional reference ranges to identify micronutrient deficiencies and nutritional imbalance. The invention provides a cost-effective, reliable, and scalable method suitable for large-scale nutritional screening, clinical diagnostics, public health monitoring, and personalized nutrition assessment without the need for invasive blood sampling.
