Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a system and method for early detection of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks in network traffic. The system is implemented at or in association with a network device and is configured to process network traffic data including packet-level data or flow-level data in real time. The network traffic data is acquired, preprocessed to remove invalid or corrupted entries, and aggregated into fixed time intervals. Temporal features are extracted by computing first-order and second-order derivatives of traffic measurements to capture rate of change and acceleration of network traffic. Statistical parameters including mean, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis are computed over a selected time window. Level-wise thresholds are determined based on the statistical parameters, and early warning alerts corresponding to multiple severity levels are generated based on comparison of the statistical parameters with the thresholds. The system enables early detection of anomalous network behavior indicative of DDoS attacks prior to service degradation, thereby reducing detection latency and improving reliability of network operation.
