Abstract: [056] The present invention discloses a nanoparticle-enhanced spatially offset Raman spectroscopy system for molecular screening of breast tissue. The system comprises a prone-position patient support table having a breast-access aperture, a near-infrared laser source operating at about 785 nm to 1064 nm, a spatially offset Raman photon detector, optical filtering elements, a control panel, a processing unit, and an output display. The system is configured for use with biocompatible gold nanoparticles functionalized with breast cancer biomarker-binding ligands, preferably human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 binding antibodies. Upon near-infrared illumination, the nanoparticles generate localized surface plasmon resonance and amplify Raman scattering from molecular constituents of target tissue regions. The processing unit performs spectral preprocessing, noise reduction, peak identification, and molecular spectral analysis to generate graphical or numerical information indicative of biochemical variations in breast tissue.
