Abstract: The present invention provides a nano-engineered pH-responsive hydrogel wound dressing integrating cabbage-derived bioactive delivery and visual monitoring of the wound microenvironment in a single dressing structure. The dressing comprises cabbage-derived bioactive extract incorporated into chitosan nanoparticles, wherein the nanoparticles are dispersed within a hydrogel matrix comprising polyvinyl alcohol and sodium alginate. The nano-engineered pH-responsive hydrogel wound-dressing formulation, comprising, per 25 mL of formulation, 2 g (8% w/v) of cabbage-derived extract, 0.30 g (1.2% w/v) of chitosan, forming chitosan nanoparticles incorporating the cabbage-derived extract, 1.5 g (6% w/v) of polyvinyl alcohol as a film-forming polymer, 0.4 g (1.6% w/v) of sodium alginate as a hydrogel matrix component, 0.6 g (2.4% w/v) of glycerol as a plasticizer; and f) 0.2–0.3 mL of anthocyanin extract as a pH-responsive indicator. The formulation is cast and dried to form a flexible hydrogel film. The prepared dressing exhibits thickness uniformity, mechanical strength, folding endurance and appreciable swelling capacity. The anthocyanin indicator exhibits a visually detectable colour response under different pH conditions. The integrated dressing thereby combines nanoparticle-mediated bioactive delivery, hydrogel-based moisture management and pH-responsive visual sensing in a single wound-care platform.
