MUMBAI, India, Sept. 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611084341 A) filed by Uttaranchal University on July 09, 2026, for A Multifunctional Self-Cleaning Coating Composition For Solar Panels.
Inventors include Shivi Chaudhary; V K Srivastava; and Ajay Singh.
The application for the patent was published on September 04, 2026, under issue no. 36/2026.
Abstract: The multifunctional nanostructured coating provides an eco-friendly, waterless, and maintenance-free solution to maintain the energy output efficiency and extend the operational lifespan of solar panels. Formulated using a sol-gel matrix or polymer-based process, the coating composition incorporates 65% to 75% of a superhydrophobic nanoparticle matrix (such as carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, or fluorinated silica) to achieve a surface roughness with a water contact angle greater than 150°, enabling passive dust removal via rolling water droplets. To prevent biological fouling in humid environments, 10% to 15% of non-toxic antimicrobial copper or zinc oxide nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed within the matrix to inhibit the growth of algae, bacteria, and fungi. Additionally, 15% to 20% of a UV-activated photocatalytic self-healing component is integrated to chemically break down organic contaminants and autonomously restore the coating's surface properties under sunlight. Experimental results confirm that this specific balanced composition preserves up to 98.5% light transmission, reduces biological growth by 99.9%, and eliminates the need for manual cleaning labor or electrical intervention.
