Abstract: A multi-metal oxide nanocomposite composition based on zinc, nickel, and selenium for eco-safe functional use is disclosed. The composition comprises a nanostructured zinc oxide host phase; a nickel-containing oxide phase deposited in intimate interfacial contact therewith by heterogeneous nucleation so as to establish a p-n heterojunction, preferably at one to twenty atomic percent nickel relative to zinc; and a selenium-containing component at about zero point one to five atomic percent held in a chemically bound, matrix-confined state, whether substituted within the lattice, encapsulated as a selenide domain beneath an oxide overgrowth, or bound at the oxide-oxide interface. The heterojunction separates photogenerated carriers while the confined selenium extends absorption into the visible region, yielding photocatalytic, antimicrobial, and sensing performance exceeding the constituent oxides and their physical mixture, with suppressed photocorrosion. Confinement suppresses leaching of soluble selenium, and magnetic cores or immobilization render the composition recoverable, reconciling high functional performance with environmental acceptability. Preparation and use methods are also disclosed.
