Abstract: A multi-layer steel–elastomer viscoelastic coupling damper for structural vibration control and a method for manufacturing the same The present invention relates to a multi-layer steel–elastomer viscoelastic coupling damper (10) for structural vibration control in buildings and bridges, comprising an upper outer steel plate (12), a central steel plate (14) and a lower outer steel plate (16) each fabricated from high-stiffness structural steel, between which first and second viscoelastic elastomeric layers (18, 20) are bonded via thermally activated adhesive layers (22). Connection tabs (24) with bolt holes (26) at opposing ends enable direct transmission of inter- storey drift forces into the outer plates (12, 16), and relative lateral displacement induces pure shear deformation in the elastomeric layers (18, 20) without yielding the steel. The elastomeric layers (18, 20) have nominal thicknesses of 10 mm and bonded shear areas of approximately 5 000 mm². A method for manufacturing the damper (10) includes degreasing, abrasive blasting, primer application, adhesive deposition and simultaneous vulcanization under pressure and heat in a hydraulic hot press.
