Abstract: The current invention discloses a modular piezoelectric pavement system that generates electrical energy using pressure developed due to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. This system consists of a multilayer pavement system that includes a top concrete pavement, intermediate aggregate cushion, and bottom subgrade, where modular piezoelectric transducers are embedded. The modular piezoelectric transducers convert mechanical energy caused by pressure or vibrations induced by vehicles and pedestrians into electrical energy. This electrical energy will be regulated using conditioning circuits such as rectifiers and regulators before storing it using energy storage devices like batteries and super capacitors. This modular design enables piezoelectric transducers to be removed, repaired, or replaced individually without destroying the entire pavement, ensuring minimal cost and effort during repair operations. The modular piezoelectric pavement system can be used for various applications such as highways, footpaths, parking lots, speed breakers, etc., since it is scalable and versatile. The energy extracted using this system can be used to run low power consuming applications such as lighting systems, traffic signals, intelligent sensors, among others. The current invention contributes towards renewable energy by generating electricity using existing civil infrastructures like pavements.
