Abstract: The present invention relates to the field of organic synthetic chemistry and provides a microwave-assisted, metal-free process for preparing an N-acyl sulfonamide product by directly reacting a carboxylic acid substrate with a sulfonamide substrate in a sealed microwave-compatible reaction vessel containing triethyl phosphite, iodine, potassium carbonate, and acetonitrile. Under air atmosphere and microwave irradiation, preferably about 400 W at about 80°C for about 20 minutes, potassium carbonate generates a carboxylate species, while triethyl phosphite and iodine form in situ an electrophilic phosphorus-containing activating species, including an iodophosphonium species, which converts the carboxylate into an activated acyl phosphorus intermediate. The sulfonamide substrate then undergoes nucleophilic acyl substitution to furnish the N-acyl sulfonamide product without pre-forming acid chlorides, anhydrides, esters, azides, transition-metal catalysts, external oxidants, or inert atmosphere.
