Abstract: The present invention relates to a paper-based microfluidic fuel cell device for sub-freezing conditions. The device comprises a porous nickel (Ni) anode coated on a paper substrate, a carbon cathode comprising reduced graphene oxide (rGO) coated on a paper substrate, and an electrolyte solution comprising vanadium trichloride (VOCl3) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4). The device is membrane-less, wherein the paper substrate forms paper channels configured to facilitate capillary action for ion movement and continuous electrolyte flow, and is configured to operate at temperatures down to -80°C. The method of preparing the device involves fabricating the porous nickel anode by spraying a nickel conductive coating onto a Grade-1 filter paper, fabricating the carbon cathode by coating a slurry comprising reduced graphene oxide and carbon acetylene black onto a Grade-1 filter paper, and preparing a fuel electrolyte mixture by dissolving vanadium oxychloride in sulfuric acid.
