MUMBAI, India, July 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202531004576 A) filed by Tata Steel Limited on January 20, 2025, for A Method Of Producing A Nickel Containing Iron Alloy From A Chromite Overburden Ore.

Inventors include Nilamadhaba Sahu; Gajanan U Kapure; Gaurav Jha; Sovan Kumar Patra; and Y. Rama Murthy.

The application for the patent was published on July 24, 2026, under issue no. 30/2026.

Abstract: Present disclosure relates to a method (100) of producing a nickel containing iron alloy from a chromite overburden ore in a furnace is disclosed. The method (100) step includes crushing (101) the chromite overburden ore to a predetermined size, to produce fines and lumps. Further, mixing (102) the crushed chromite overburden ore fines with a binder and moisture, to form briquettes (203). The method (100) further includes smelting (103) the briquettes (203) along with the chromite overburden ore lumps, coke, lime, quartzite and mill scale in the furnace operating at a predetermined temperature. After smelting (103), the furnace produces (104) the nickel containing iron alloy and slag which includes in weight percentage (wt%) of Ni: 1.1% to 3.5%; Cr: 1.0% to 8.0%; Si: 1.0% to 5.0%; Mn: 0.5% to 2.0%; C: 2.0% to 4.0%; P: 0.02% to 0.05%; and balance being Fe with incidental elements and impurities.
