MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611086618 A) filed by Uttaranchal University on July 15, 2026, for A Method For The Quantitative Evaluation Of Dehydration-Induced Mortality In Drosophila Melanogaster Uses Thereof.

Inventor includes Divya Singh.

The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.

Abstract: This invention establishes a novel, morphology-based diagnostic framework for evaluating dehydration-induced mortality in Drosophila melanogaster using high- resolution Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). While traditional physiological assays rely on biochemical or molecular markers to estimate desiccation limits, this investigation presents a direct, ultrastructural biomarker of fatal systemic water loss by analyzing the compound eye. Wild-type specimens were subjected to controlled, lethal desiccation stress, prepared via conductive carbon-tape mounting, sputter-coated with a gold-palladium alloy, and imaged using SEM. Quantitative comparative analysis against hydrated control specimens revealed a catastrophic collapse of the compound eye’s regular, hexagonal ommatidial lattice. Dehydrated specimens exhibited deep corneal surface concavity, severe cuticular wrinkling, and loss of ommatidial symmetry, correlating directly with the depletion of internal hydrostatic turgor pressure. This morphology-restricted evaluation serves as a highly reproducible, endpoint-specific predictor of dehydration tolerance limits, with broad implications for insect stress physiology and environmental monitoring.
