MUMBAI, India, Aug. 17 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641095578 A) filed by T Sowmya Priyadharshini; and Rengasamy Sathya on August 07, 2026, for A Method For Spirulina Maxima Enriched Biodegradable Antimicrobial Film Preparation.

Inventors include T Sowmya Priyadharshini; and Rengasamy Sathya.

The application for the patent was published on August 14, 2026, under issue no. 33/2026.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a Spirulina maxima enriched biodegradable antimicrobial film, preparation method, and coating composition for food packaging and surface protection. The film comprises a biopolymer matrix selected from chitosan, starch, gelatin, or polyvinyl alcohol, incorporating a solvent-extracted Spirulina maxima extract containing bioactive micronutrients iron, copper, and zinc along with phycocyanin at 0.5 to 10 weight percent. A plasticizer selected from glycerol, sorbitol, or polyethylene glycol at 5 to 30 weight percent maintains film flexibility. Solvent-assisted extraction using ethanol or methanol at 40 to 80 degrees Celsius maximizes phycocyanin and micronutrient yield. The film is cast and dried at 20 to 60 degrees Celsius. The coating composition reduces Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli counts by at least 3 log CFU per milliliter within 24 hours, providing improved antimicrobial efficacy, enhanced biodegradability, reduced environmental impact, and sustainable food packaging protection.
