MUMBAI, India, Sept. 28 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202621038875 A) filed by Sage Green Industries Pvt Ltd on March 29, 2026, for A Method For Recovery Of Polymeric Materials From Lithium-Ion Batteries Scrap.
Inventors include Khurana, Karan; and Malviya, Anurag.
The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for systematic recovery of polymeric materials (separator membranes, labels) from spent 18650 lithium-ion cells, producing clean polymeric products with contamination below 5% by weight and thermal energy content of approximately 40 MJ/kg (comparable to coal). The method addresses the technical challenge of separating ultrafine, low-density polymer particles (25-micron separator membranes fragmenting into 0.1-2 mm particles) from similarly fine active material particles that otherwise aggregate through electrostatic attraction. The solution comprises: (1) liquid-phase grinding in non-polar solvent (mineral oil, alkane) preventing electrostatic adhesion and thermal degradation; (2) optimized air classification at high velocity (6-10 m/s) specifically calibrated for low-density polymers; and (3) secondary solvent washing and centrifugal separation achieving 5% residual contamination. The recovered polymeric material is directly suitable for either waste-to-energy thermal valorization or secondary polymer recycling, addressing previously overlooked and discarded material stream currently lost through pyrometallurgical combustion or mechanical discard.
