MUMBAI, India, Sept. 28 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202621038872 A) filed by Sage Green Industries Pvt Ltd on March 29, 2026, for A Method For Recovery Of High-Purity Black Mass From Lithium-Ion Batteries Scrap.

Inventors include Khurana, Karan; and Malviya, Anurag.

The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a comprehensive mechanical recycling method for selective recovery of high-purity black mass ( 95% active materials) from spent 18650 format NMC lithium-ion cells. The method employs a novel controlled electrochemical discharge stage utilizing 6.0% w/v sodium chloride solution to safely neutralize residual cell charge without inducing aluminum corrosion or active material oxidation. Following safe discharge, the battery undergoes optimized mechanical liberation through primary shredding (300-600 RPM) and secondary grinding (200-400 RPM with integrated cooling), producing target particle sizes of 0.5-1.0 millimeters. The liberated material is subjected to multi-stage separation comprising sieving, air classification (2-8 m/s), eddy-current separation, and magnetic separation, achieving selective recovery of high-purity black mass ( 1% aluminum, 0.5% copper) directly suitable for hydrometallurgical metal recovery. Simultaneously, the process achieves high-purity recovery of copper ( 98%), aluminum ( 97%), and polymeric materials ( 95% purity), creating comprehensive component valorization. The method reduces energy consumption by 80-90% compared to pyrometallurgical alternatives and enables production of multiple high-value product streams from a single mechanical recycling infrastructure.
