MUMBAI, India, Sept. 28 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202621038874 A) filed by Sage Green Industries Pvt Ltd on March 29, 2026, for A Method For Recovery Of Aluminium From Lithium-Ion Batteries Scrap.
Inventors include Khurana, Karan; and Malviya, Anurag.
The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for selective recovery of unoxidized, clean metallic ALUMINIUM ( 97% purity) from spent 18650 lithium-ion cells, enabling direct reintroduction into secondary ALUMINIUM melting facilities and capturing the full 95% energy savings benefit of secondary ALUMINIUM recycling versus primary production. The method overcomes ALUMINIUM oxidation challenges through: (1) non-corrosive 6% NaCl electrochemical discharge preventing ALUMINIUM surface oxidation; (2) liquid-phase grinding conducted in nitrogen-purged mineral oil or alkane solvent, preventing atmospheric oxygen contact with freshly exposed ALUMINIUM surfaces; and (3) immediate transfer to inert-atmosphere storage (argon or nitrogen), maintaining surface oxidation below 0.5% by weight (substantially below conventional 5-20% oxidation). The recovered ALUMINIUM comprises 40-50% foil fragments, 30-40% intermediate fragments, and 10- 20% fine powder, with high purity maintained throughout processing. The process eliminates pyrometallurgical oxidation losses (50-90%) that render ALUMINIUM unsuitable for high-specification applications, enabling direct valorization of previously underutilized battery ALUMINIUM streams.
