Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for polymer-based treatment of aggregates using waste low-density polyethylene (LDPE) for preparation of polymer-coated aggregates and polymer-modified bituminous mixes for flexible pavement applications. The method comprises collecting and shredding waste LDPE material, heating aggregates, coating the heated aggregates with softened LDPE under mixing conditions, and subsequently adding heated bitumen to prepare a polymer-modified bituminous mix. The polymer-coated aggregates exhibit reduced impact value, reduced abrasion loss, reduced water absorption, and improved durability characteristics. The resultant bituminous mix demonstrates enhanced Marshall stability, improved indirect tensile strength (ITS), improved tensile strength ratio (TSR), and increased resistance against moisture-induced damage and stripping. Optimum performance is achieved at approximately 8% polymer content by weight of aggregates. The invention provides a cost-effective, scalable, and environmentally sustainable solution for utilization of waste plastic material in pavement construction applications.
