Abstract: ABSTRACT A METHOD FOR OPERATING A VAPOR COMPRESSION SYSTEM This disclosure presents a method (100) for operating a vapor compression refrigeration system designed to reduce refrigerant charge while maintaining stable performance. The process begins with compressing a refrigerant to generate a high-pressure, high-temperature vapor stream. The refrigerant is then condensed in a falling film condenser operated with substantially zero outlet subcooling, which minimizes liquid refrigerant inventory. Following condensation, the refrigerant is expanded in an expansion device to lower its pressure and temperature. Downstream, heat is exchanged in a plate heat exchanger, where the refrigerant transfers heat with a suction vapor stream, superheating the suction vapor and stabilizing compressor inlet conditions. Finally, the refrigerant is evaporated to absorb heat from the environment and returned to the compressor, completing the cycle. This arrangement eliminates liquid storage in the condenser, reduces overall refrigerant inventory and enhances safety compliance, particularly for flammable hydrocarbon refrigerants such as propane (R290).
