MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611088366 A) filed by Graphic Era Deemed To Be University on July 20, 2026, for A Method For Hydrothermal Synthesis Of Metformin-Derived Zinc Oxide Quantum Dots And Use Thereof.

Inventors include Dr. Vibha Joshi; Dr. Vishwajeet Bachhar; Dr. Rajesh Haldhar; Dr. Sakthivel Kogularasu; and Guo-Ping Chang-Chien.

The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.

Abstract: The invention relates to nanomaterials synthesis and surface-engineered ZnO quantum dots. Disclosed is a metformin-derived zinc oxide quantum dots material having a crystalline ZnO quantum dot framework with metformin-derived carbonaceous, nitrogen-containing, and oxygen-containing surface chemistry, obtainable by dissolving expired metformin in water, adding zinc acetate dihydrate, adjusting the mixture to pH 9.0 with 0.1 M NaOH, and hydrothermally treating at 140 °C for 24 h, followed by recovery and drying. The material comprises predominantly spherical particles of about 5.16 ± 1.67 nm, a highly crystalline hexagonal wurtzite ZnO lattice, and surface hydroxyl, amine, carbonyl, C-N, C-O, and conjugated nitrogen-containing groups. The invention advances waste-to-value synthesis by using expired metformin as carbon precursor and surface-functionalizing component. Principal uses include non-therapeutic inhibition of mild steel corrosion in 1.0 M H2SO4, antioxidant applications, antibacterial applications, and in vitro contact with human dermal fibroblast cells.
