Abstract: ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a single-step, cost-effective method for preparing a heteroatom multi-doped carbon nanofibres composite-based electrode for lithium–sulfur batteries using unwashed bacterial cellulose. Retained bacterial cells and residual culture media act as in situ sources of nitrogen, phosphorus, and oxygen during carbonization, producing a hierarchical micro–mesoporous carbon network without additional external doping agents or process involving activation to prepare the matrix. Sulfur infiltration forms a sulfur-carbon composite exhibiting enhanced sulfur confinement, strong polysulfide adsorption, improved electrical conductivity, and efficient ion/electron transport, thereby suppressing the shuttle effect and accommodating sulfur volume changes. The electrode delivers improved rate capability and long-term cycling stability, making it an efficient sulfur host for high-performance lithium-sulfur battery cathodes.
