MUMBAI, India, Aug. 10 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411103672 A) filed by Chairman, Defence Research & Development on December 27, 2024, for A Method For Ex-Situ Healing Of Neoprene Rubber Vulcanizates.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for ex-situ healing of covalently crosslinked polychloroprene rubber vulcanizates, which typically undergo irreparable damage due to wear, tear, or harsh environmental exposure. The method involves preparing vulcanizates using polychloroprene rubber cured with ionic and sulfur-based curatives. The damaged vulcanizates, simulated by imposing cuts, exhibit significant loss in mechanical strength and elongation. A healing process is then performed using a reagent solution derived from the N-chloroamine class of chemicals, applied at ambient temperature. This process ensures complete recovery of mechanical properties, restoring the material’s strength and elongation. The method is effective for both on-site and off-site applications, providing an efficient and practical solution to restore damaged rubber components. The present invention addresses the need for a reliable method to repair highly filled rubber vulcanizates, ensuring long-term durability and enhanced performance under challenging operational conditions.
