The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.
Abstract: A method is disclosed for enhancing the dry sliding wear resistance of an aluminium-silicon carbide particulate metal matrix composite. An Al6061 matrix composite reinforced with silicon carbide particulates at a reinforcement content of about 3 to 9 weight percent is subjected to a deep cryogenic treatment comprising soaking the composite in liquid nitrogen vapour at approximately -184°C to -196°C for an extended holding period, followed by a slow, controlled return to room temperature. The cryogenically treated composite exhibits a substantially reduced cumulative weight loss and wear rate, as measured on a pin-on-disc tribometer under dry sliding conditions, as compared to an untreated composite of identical composition, the improvement being most pronounced at reinforcement contents of about 5% and about 9% by weight silicon carbide under load-varying wear conditions. The invention provides a wear-resistant composite material suitable for automotive, aerospace and structural applications subject to sliding wear.
