Abstract: ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a method and system for comparative seismic performance evaluation of regular and irregular multi-storey reinforced concrete (RCC) buildings subjected to earthquake loads. The method is implemented through three-dimensional finite-element modelling in ETABS software and employs Response Spectrum Analysis in accordance with IS 1893 (Part 1): 2016 and IS 456: 2000. Two parallel building models—one regular (symmetrical geometry, uniform mass and stiffness distribution) and one irregular (incorporating plan or vertical irregularities such as re-entrant corners, setbacks, or stiffness discontinuities)—are created under strictly identical material properties, gravity loads, seismic zone parameters, and boundary conditions. This parallel modelling isolates the pure effect of structural irregularity on seismic response. Key response parameters extracted and compared include base shear, maximum storey displacement, inter-storey drift ratio, storey stiffness distribution, fundamental natural time period, and modal mass participation ratios. Code-compliance checks are performed against prescribed drift limits and the requirement of at least 90% cumulative modal mass participation. A quantitative comparative performance matrix is generated, revealing that irregular configurations typically exhibit higher lateral displacement (approximately 16–19% higher), increased inter-storey drift (20–30% higher), longer fundamental period (indicating reduced lateral stiffness), and lower first-mode mass participation compared with regular configurations, while design base shear may be marginally lower due to the longer period. The invention further produces actionable design recommendations, including preference for regular layouts wherever functionally feasible, and, when irregularity is unavoidable, the addition of shear walls, bracing systems, ductile detailing, or stiffness optimization. By formalizing a multi-parameter, code-aligned, software-integrated comparative workflow, the invention overcomes the limitations of ad-hoc single-model analyses and provides structural engineers with a rational, repeatable decision-support tool for designing safer earthquake-resistant buildings in seismic regions of India and similar territories. The method is particularly suited to G+10 and high-rise RCC framed buildings, including those employing advanced construction systems such as Mivan formwork with RC shear walls.
