MUMBAI, India, Aug. 12 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541073225 A) filed by Manipal Academy Of Higher Education on August 01, 2025, for A Method And Composition For A Biodegradable Tissue Phantom For Biopsy Training And Simulation.

Inventors include Merwyn Fernandes; and Rochelle Cheryl Monteiro.

The application for the patent was published on August 07, 2026, under issue no. 32/2026.

Abstract: A method of forming a biodegradable tissue phantom 100 for CT-guided biopsy training and simulation is disclosed. The method comprises procuring non-synthetic cereal-derived components to form a base material 101; combining the base material 101 with binding and thickening agents 103 to form a first mixture; incorporating adjustable additives 107 into the first mixture to form a second mixture, thereby modifying firmness and mechanical resistance to simulate different tissue types; introducing optional embedding agents 105 into the second mixture to simulate pathological lesions; and pouring and setting the second mixture into an anatomical mold to form the biodegradable tissue phantom 100. The resulting phantom exhibits coordinated needle-penetration resistance and radiographic attenuation simulating human soft tissue, providing an affordable, biodegradable, and environmentally sustainable alternative to conventional synthetic tissue phantoms.
