Abstract: Title: A metamaterial-based compact structure for isolation enhancement in densely spaced MIMO antennas The present invention relates to radio frequency (RF) engineering and, more particularly, to a metamaterial-based compact decoupling element for reducing mutual electromagnetic coupling between adjacent radiating elements of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna. The decoupling element comprises a miniaturized metamaterial unit element (1) having concentric conductive rings (2) and (3) interconnected by a conductive connecting portion (4) configured to establish an anti-parallel current path and exhibit an epsilon-negative electromagnetic response. A plurality of the metamaterial unit elements (1) are arranged as a coplanar decoupling array (6) between adjacent antenna radiators (5) to generate evanescent electromagnetic fields that suppress electromagnetic coupling without substantially increasing the antenna footprint. The proposed decoupling structure enhances port isolation while improving envelope correlation coefficient (ECC), diversity gain (DG), and mean effective gain (MEG), thereby improving spatial diversity and communication reliability. The invention is particularly suitable for compact wireless communication devices employing sub-6 GHz MIMO antenna systems, including fifth-generation (5G) communication terminals.
