Abstract: A MECHANO-CHEMICAL PROCESS FOR BLACK MASS AND PVDF RECOVERY FROM SPENT LITHIUM-ION BATTERY CELLS. A mechano-chemical process is disclosed for recovering black mass and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder from spent lithium-ion battery cells and manufacturing scrap. Battery cells are mechanically opened and contacted with a process solvent capable of dissolving the PVDF binder, separating active electrode material from aluminium and copper current collectors substantially without pyrolysis or thermal decomposition. The resulting black mass is separated from the process solvent, the dissolved PVDF is recovered by anti-solvent precipitation, and the process solvent is regenerated and recycled to the delamination step. The recovered black mass retains the crystalline structure and composition of the original electrode material, the current collectors are recovered substantially free of coating, and the recovered PVDF binder and process solvent are each suitable for reuse. Avoiding pyrolysis reduces energy consumption and fluorinated-gas emissions and reduces binder contamination of the black mass ahead of downstream hydrometallurgical processing, providing an economically and environmentally sustainable route for lithium-ion battery recycling.
