Abstract: ABSTRACT A Machine for Harvesting and Processing Chia Seed for Smallholder Wildlife-Conflict-Prone Farms The present invention provides a compact, affordable, field-portable machine for harvesting and processing chia seed (Salvia hispanica L.) and other fine-seeded crops to market-grade purity at the scale of a smallholder or small farmer cooperative. The machine integrates, in operative combination, a feeding-and-stripping assembly, a gentle low-impact threshing assembly comprising a resilient drum and adjustable concave (or counter-rotating resilient rollers), a sieve-and-air separation assembly, and a grading assembly, so that harvested crop material is converted in a single pass or a minimal number of passes into clean, uniform, market-grade seed. The gentle threshing action and the adjustable sieve-and-air separation preserve the integrity and oil content of the fine seed while removing chaff, stem fragments, immature seed and dust. The throughput, sieve aperture and air velocity are user-adjustable, enabling a single unit to serve chia, quinoa and other fine-seeded crops under varying field conditions, while the low power demand suits off-grid and forest-fringe use. By removing the principal post-harvest barrier to adopting wildlife-unpalatable crops, the machine enables forest- fringe cultivators to realise the economic and conservation benefits of such crops in human-wildlife-conflict-prone landscapes.
