MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611108921 A) filed by Chitkara University on September 10, 2026, for A Low-Volume Microfluidic Calprotectin Detection Device For Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Inventors include Dr. Sanjana Mehta; Rythem Sharma; Shushank Mahajan; and Thakur Gurjeet Singh.

The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.

Abstract: A low-volume microfluidic device quantitatively detects calprotectin from a plasma fraction separated from finger-prick whole blood. A disposable cartridge comprises a hydrophilic sample inlet, porous plasma separation membrane, capillary channel network, reaction chamber bearing immobilized anti-calprotectin antibodies, pre- loaded colorimetric reagent, and waste reservoir. The membrane retains blood cells while plasma moves by capillary action to the reaction chamber. Calprotectin binding and the reagent generate a concentration-dependent colored product. A handheld reader illuminates the reaction zone at a predetermined wavelength and measures reflected or transmitted intensity using an LED and photodetector. A microcontroller applies a stored calibration relationship, compensates for turbidity and background intensity, calculates calprotectin concentration, and assigns a Low, Moderate, or High inflammatory-status category. A display presents the concentration and category. The disposable cartridge remains physically isolated from the reusable reader, and the complete measured analysis takes 255 seconds.
