MUMBAI, India, June 19 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411088208 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Delhi on November 14, 2024, for A Low Power Consumption Apparatus And Method For Computing A Square Root.
Inventors include Jayadeva; Kaushik Saha; and B Sai Teja.
The application for the patent was published on June 05, 2026, under issue no. 23/2026.
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a low-power apparatus for computing the square root of an input value ‘A’. A first detector module determines the leading one position ‘k’ in the binary form of ‘A’. A first shifter module produces a shifter output ‘k/2’ and a first decoder module generates a first decoder output ‘2k’. A residual module computes a residual term ‘x’ by subtracting the decoder output from ‘A’. The second decoder and second shifter modules generate intermediate values based on ‘k/2’ and ‘x’. The second and third detector modules identify non-zero values in the lower half of these intermediate values. An approximate adder module combines these values to estimate the square root of ‘A’, applying precision compensation when ‘k’ is odd. The present invention achieves an efficient square root computation with minimal power consumption and enhanced precision. (Fig. 1)
