Abstract: The present invention deals with the development of a low-cost, high-speed optical sensor system for the on-site detection, classification, quantification and structural analysis of microplastics in water. This compact, handheld, battery-powered device utilizes a multi-wavelength optical module that integrates fluorescence, Near-Infrared (NIR), Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR), and optical attenuation techniques for sample illumination. Water samples are introduced directly, without external preprocessing. Captured optical signals are processed by embedded lightweight Machine-Learning (Al) algorithms to rapidly perform polymer classification, particle size estimation, concentration quantification and structural detection. The device yields precise, realtime results within seconds, overcoming the limitations of conventional laboratory methods (FTIR, Raman and NMR spectroscopic techniques) that require high-end instruments, trained personnel, and long analysis times. With a low target manufacturing cost and features like cloud connectivity for data storage and automated regulatory reporting, the system provides a scalable and practical solution for distributed environmental monitoring, especially for sensing the microplastics in aquatic environment.
