Abstract: ABSTRACT A LIQUID-COOLED BATTERY THERMAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM WITH PASSIVE HYDRAULIC COOLANT DISTRIBUTION The present invention provides a liquid-cooled battery thermal management system (100) configured for passive hydraulic distribution of coolant among a plurality of battery modules (104). The system comprises a trunked coolant manifold (102) including a coolant inlet (110) at a first end and a plurality of axially arranged stepped portions (102a-102d) extending along a coolant flow direction, each stepped portion having an internal flow cross-section that varies along the coolant flow direction. Each stepped portion includes at least two circumferentially arranged outlet ports (112a-112h). A plurality of restrictor assemblies including restrictor inserts (114) are disposed at the outlet ports, each restrictor assembly (114a-114h) including a restrictor housing (136) and a removable restrictor insert (114) having an internal orifice configured to provide graded flow restriction along the coolant flow direction. A plurality of cooling plates (116) are fluidly connected to the outlet ports and thermally coupled to respective battery modules (104), each cooling plate including internal coolant channels (120) having variable transverse widths. The stepped manifold, graded restrictor inserts, and variable-width channels cooperate to provide passive distribution of coolant without active flow control devices.
