Abstract: The present disclosure proposes a hydrogel device (100) for direct air carbon dioxide capture and in-situ mineralization using a rechargeable hydrogel medium, thereby facilitating continuous carbon dioxide sequestration through a rechargeable hydrogel-based capture arrangement. The hydrogel device (100) comprises a housing (102) defining an internal capture chamber (104), an air inlet (106), an air outlet (108), and a hydrogel cartridge (110) containing a semi-crosslinked hydrogel formed from a pre-gel aqueous alginate solution ionically crosslinked with a calcium salt solution. The hydrogel cartridge (110) is confined between porous retaining walls (111) and recharged with the calcium salt solution from charging solution reservoirs (112) through spray nozzles (114), a controllable valve (118), and a control unit (120) responsive to a pressure sensor (116). Atmospheric carbon dioxide diffuses into the hydrogel, undergoes in-situ mineralization into carbonate products retained within the hydrogel cartridge (110), and air having reduced carbon dioxide concentration is discharged through the air outlet (108).
